Don’t you wish we could all pick fruit off of our own trees? Unfortunately, for those of us who don’t live in the Hot Spots, fruit can be expensive.
So here are some tips on how to save money on fresh fruit:
- Buy fruit loose, rather than pre-packed. The price will probably be a lot lower.
- Include dried fruit. It is usually cheaper than fresh fruit, piece by piece, and makes a convenient snack.
- Fruit that’s local and in season should be cheaper than fruit which has been flown in from far away. Try a farmer’s market or fruit CSA for good deals.
- Find the nearest pick-your-own fruit farm. It’s cheaper, the fruit is perfectly ripe, and you get fresh air and exercise. Kids love it, and it’s a great way to get them to eat fruit.
- If your climate permits and you have space outside, try growing your own fruit trees or grape vines.
You might say your budget can’t accommodate much fresh fruit. But think about it: How much does a piece of fruit cost compared to that 20-ounce soda and bag of chips? Put like that, the best choice seems obvious.
