Moving with the seasons

As part of the Akea community, you know the importance of working regular physical activity into your daily routine—just as people do in Longevity Hot Spots.

You might find that you enjoy different types of movement during different seasons. You may not like running outdoors in the depths of winter or doing something too vigorous in the summer heat. It’s a good idea to choose accordingly, since you are more likely to stick with activities you enjoy.

Here are a few tips to follow as you plan your activities…

In vs. out—

  • Good in hot weather: yoga, swimming
  • Good in mild weather: yoga, walking, hiking, running, ball games
  • Good in cold weather: indoor classes such as yoga or dance, running (you’ll soon warm up!)

Get variety. Try to get a mix of:

  • Aerobic activity (such as running or aerobic workouts)
  • Stretching movements (such as yoga or Pilates)
  • Strengthening movements (such as certain types of weight-lifting)

(You may need to plan a schedule to make sure you do all of these.)

Build connections—Remember that playing together is a great way to build connections with your family and friends, both new and old. In cold weather, try meeting at a gym or inviting someone to your favorite Pilates class. Beautiful outside? Invite people to meet you at the park for a game of kickball. (Yes, grownups can play!)

As long as you are getting some movement regularly (and sharing some of that time with other people), you’re being Hot Spot Healthy.

Stay with it—you’ll be so glad you did!
